In this workshop we will focus on multilingualism from the perspective of psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics and show how multiple languages work in our minds. We will look at familiar stereotypes, such as the optimal timing of learning other languages, their benefits or harms, and touch on topics such as developmental speech disorders and specific learning disabilities in multilingual speakers. In addition to neurolinguistic and psycholinguistic findings, we will also focus on the importance of language learning as a tool for personal development and self-improvement.
Indeed, the process of acquiring a new language itself not only contributes to the overall improvement of communication skills, but also promotes the development of cultural empathy and critical thinking. At the same time, cognitive skills and memory can be developed and problem-solving skills can be improved. This is a key skill for making informed decisions in both personal and professional contexts.
It is undeniable that, from an educational perspective, learning multiple languages opens the door to new academic and professional opportunities and contributes to overall personal and intellectual growth. The workshop will include sharing experiences with a family who is raising their children multilingual. The aim is to share good practice, i.e. what is functional and meaningful and ultimately to promote the acquisition of multiple languages in our society.
