Learning to Tackle Imposter Syndrome and English-Language Speaking Skills in Academic Presentations and Public Speaking

Presenters: Abigail Mokra

Section: Learning to Tackle Imposter Syndrome and English-Language Speaking Skills in Academic Presentations and Public Speaking
Session typ: Workshop
Duration: 60 minutes

Abstract

Presentation skills are life skills; but for many students, they’re the stuff of nightmares, and therein lies our challenge. In this workshop, we’ll unpack the psychological processes that can exacerbate the challenges of public speaking and discuss strategies and best practices for acknowledging and mitigating them as instructors. We’ll examine approaches to presentations from other students, instructors, TED series speakers, and more, while we review the stages of building academic presentations and discuss their transferability to tasks and situations beyond university. Instructors will walk away armed with the skills to impart stress management techniques, critical thinking skills, and a clear idea of what makes a presentation engaging, effective, and memorable.

Jak hodnotit čtení - kdo, co, jak?

Presenters: Faculty of Arts team

Section: CEFR related assessment
Session type: Sharing session
Duration: 60 minutes

Abstract

Session type: Workshop
Duration: 180 minutes

Abstract

Workshop bude rozdělen do dvou hlavních částí.

LSP vs. specific discipline. Can they be constructively aligned?

Presenters: Veronika Dvořáčková

Section: Course design/Teaching methods
Session type: Presentation followed by discussion
Duration: 45 minutes

Abstract

Although LSP teachers are rightly advised to tread the thin line between the foreign language and specific content with outmost care, I will try to argue in my presentation there are courses on the medical curriculum which show a degree of overlap with some aspects of the teaching methodology and indeed some of the learning outcomes of the English for Medicine (EM) course, as designed and taught at the CJV LF department. Using the example of the currently built bioethical module of our EM course, I will try to specify the areas of the common interest in more detail and discuss the implications for the module´s content and teaching methodology.
Room 300
SIG Mediation and language assessment

Presenter: Eva Složilová

Section: Special Interest Group meeting
Session type: Sharing session
Duration: 45 minutes

Abstract

This session is aimed at those across all departments and foreign languages taught at CJV who are interested in the newly developed CEFR Companion Volume (2020) descriptors for mediation, who plan to integrate them into their departments' teaching (or have already done so), and who also want to assess adequately in line with them (or are already doing so). The session will focus on sharing participants' past experiences with mediation in various forms of language assessment, as well as the expectations and challenges that may accompany mediation in assessment. The outcomes of the meeting will be used in the planned launch of a new Mediation and Language Assessment Interest Group prior to the start of the Spring 2023 semester.
