Presentation skills are life skills; but for many students, they’re the stuff of nightmares, and therein lies our challenge. In this workshop, we’ll unpack the psychological processes that can exacerbate the challenges of public speaking and discuss strategies and best practices for acknowledging and mitigating them as instructors. We’ll examine approaches to presentations from other students, instructors, TED series speakers, and more, while we review the stages of building academic presentations and discuss their transferability to tasks and situations beyond university. Instructors will walk away armed with the skills to impart stress management techniques, critical thinking skills, and a clear idea of what makes a presentation engaging, effective, and memorable.
