This summer school is based on the need for insight into teaching and learning in a second language, given the internationalisation of higher education and the burgeoning use of English as lingua franca. Targeting all teachers or lecturers typically with English as a second language – of programmes run in English for students with English as a second language – it consists of a series of participative seminars with activities to encourage reflective analysis on both professional practice and professional performance.

Content centres on linguistic and paralinguistic aspects of communication in groups, pedagogy and design of the teaching and learning experience, and strategies for understanding and handling the added dimension of linguistic competence within the student calibre, such as differentiated teaching within a single dynamic. It is expected that participants in the week’s sessions will broaden their own repertoire as educators, deepen their insight into the learner experience, and raise their contribution to raised quality standards in the university sector.

A Welcome from Dr Libor Štěpánek, the Masaryk University Language Centre Director

Welcome to The English Mediated Instruction/Academic Skills in English Summer School which offers you a highly professional language development experience at Masaryk University. The course is carefully structured to give you a unique learning and study experience of an English Summer School in the Centre of Brno. A group of international and Masaryk University experts will provide you with an opportunity to develop an understanding of ways to approach teaching in university programmes delivered through the medium of English. Those five days will help you to get practical insight into how to use specific tools and techniques inside the classroom, how to develop and adjust materials, how to make students consciously aware of the English language in their fields or how to be effective in communication in the international academic environment.

Your days will consist of stimulating and informative seminars which will be combined with interactive and highly practical workshops. In three distinct sessions each day, you will have a chance to interact, discuss, practise and reflect on your English language and teaching practice with your university colleagues. You may also discover and explore new areas of academic skills in English which you have perhaps not had the chance to focus on before.

The Summer School will also give you an opportunity to get to know Brno and the region, to professionally network and make new friends or simply enjoy a special learning experience in a beautiful atmosphere of Masaryk University.

Masaryk University Language Centre – the summer school venue

The programme will take place in the Masaryk University Building at Komenského náměstí 2, Brno, Czech Republic.

Today, the building offers state-of-the-art teaching and learning resources and facilities to Masaryk University students and staff-members.
