Tématem přednášky je osvojování lexika z psycholingvistické perspektivy. Načrtneme si, jak probíhá osvojování slovní zásoby v mateřském jazyce, a zaměříme se na proces osvojování lexika v jazyce druhém/cizím. Pokusíme se vysvětlit, proč jsou některé výrazy z hlediska osvojování obtížné, proč jejich osvojování trvá dlouho a jaký mají tato slova vztah ke gramatice/struktuře jazyka.

The topic of this presentation is the acquisition of vocabulary from psycholinguistic perspective. The process of lexicon acquisition in L1 and L2 will be introduced. We will try to explain why some words are more difficult to acquire then other, why the acquisition takes longer and what is the relationship of the words to the grammar/structure of a language.

V příspěvku bude prezentován nový projekt zaměřený na vývoj alternativních forem hodnocení, (především portfoliového hodnocení) pro vybrané jazykové kurzy na FSS MU. Autoři představí jak teoretické ukotvení a kontext, v němž projekt vznikl, tak také některé praktické aspekty jeho pilotáže.

A new project aimed at developing alternative forms of assessment (esp. portfolio-based assessment) for selected language courses at the Faculty of Social Studies of Masaryk University will be presented through explaining its theoretical underpinnings and contextualisation as well as discussing some practical aspects of the pilot phase of the project.

The seminar will focus on structuring a history lesson in ELT through drama. We will use a story of a girl sold by her brother as a bride into another culture without the knowledge of the language. We will look at the story from the point of view of all the protagonists: the girl, her father, her brother, and the future husband in the context of the period and the politics of the time. We will calculate the girl’s journey to the faraway country in the horse-drawn carriage and compare it with today´s means of travel.

The first part of the workshop will shortly introduce the task-based English exam for master students at Faculty of Arts in the context of the course and of the general teaching situation at this faculty. The second part of the workshop will be practical, the participants will work with concrete examples of students´ work and use pilot versions of the evaluation tools.

Jazykový tandem má za sebou dva semestry trvání. Vznikl na Lékařské fakultě MU, kde vedle sebe funguje český a anglický studijní program. Mnozí cizinci komunikují česky jenom na univerzitě a během praxí na klinikách. Cílem Jazykového tandemu je rozvíjení kontaktů mezi českými a zahraničními mediky a jejich oboustranné kulturní obohacení. Seznámíme vás s náplní kurzu a zpětnou vazbou od studentů.

The Language Tandem course has been offered in the past two semesters at the Faculty of Medicine, where the Czech and English programmes coexist side by side. Many international students only communicate in Czech at university and at the hospital, during practical lessons. The aim of the course is to encourage contact between students of the two programmes and broaden their cultural awareness. We will introduce the content of the course and students feed back.

Workshop představí koncepci výuky latinské terminologie na Lékařské fakultě se zaměřením na některá její specifika. The workshop will present the concepts used in teaching Latin and Greek Medical Terminology at Medical Faculty with focus put on its specifics. Practical part will be dedicated to the possibilities and methods of using authentic medical records in class as well as to the interactive exercises designed for students to encompass word compounding in medical fields. Participants will have the opportunity to explore various types of activities exercising anatomic and clinical terminology as well as word compounding principles applied in medical terminology.

Cílem workshopu je ukázat, jak lze využít zdroje autentického jazyka, jako jsou anglické filmy a písničky, v ESP výuce ke zvýšení kvality diskuzí týkajících se problematiky relevantní studijnímu oboru studentů (např. tím, že poskytují klíčová témata a sadu přirozených jazykových výrazů pro zvolenou problematiku) a k efektivnímu vysvětlení a procvičení určitého gramatického jevu.

The aim of the workshop is to demonstrate how sources of authentic language, such as English movies and songs, can be used in ESP lessons to enhance in-class discussions on issues relevant to the students’ field of study by providing students with key themes and a set of natural lexical expressions regarding the chosen issue, as well as to effectively explain and practice a particular grammatical phenomenon.

Pecha Kucha is a unique presentation style in which 20 slides are shown for 20 seconds each. This format, devised in 2003, keeps presentations concise and past-paced. Pecha Kucha is usually delivered by one speaker; however, in this workshop, you will work in small teams to experience the preparation process and delivery.

Pecha Kucha je originální prezentace, která se skládá z 20 snímků, z nichž každý je promítán pouze 20 vteřin. Výsledkem je stručná a hutná prezentace o celkové délce necelých 7 minut. Workshop představí 2 aktivity podporující kreativitu a poslechové dovednosti studentů. Aktivita 1 nazvaná Call My Bluff – studenti obdrží název a definici neobvyklého sportu a vytvoří dva další distraktory pro své kolegy, kteří se snaží rozpoznat správné řešení. Aktivita 2: doplnění chybějících částí textu písně. Studenti uslyší část textu písně, hádají správné dokončení rýmu z nabídky. Poslechem kontrolují správnost.

Two activities encouraging student´s creativity and listening skills will be presented within the worskhop. Activity 1 with the title Call My Bluff – students obtain one name of an unusual sport with its definition and think up two non-existing fictitious sports with their definitions. Activity 2 using song lyrics – students try to figure out the ending of the verse they hear.

The workshop demonstrates a practical implementation of cooperative learning methods into business English instruction. The lesson is based on the three-phase learning process, starting with techniques for lead-in and motivation, followed by practices of content analysis and closes with reflection through speaking and writing activities. The topic reflects the relationship between economy and current social issues. The goal of the lesson is to illustrate the need for restructuring educational procedures to better prepare student graduates for practice and active citizenship.

Workshop nabízí praktickou ukázku implementace metod kooperativního učení do výuky obchodní angličtiny. Ukázková hodina demonstruje vybrané interaktivní metody pro motivační fázi učebního procesu, analýzu textu a poslechu, i reflexi v mluvené a psané formě. Zaměření workshopu reflektuje vztah ekonomie a vybraného společenského tématu současnosti. Cílem workshopu je ilustrovat potřebu propojení vzdělávání a přípravy na pracovní praxi v širším celospolečenském kontextu.

In diesem Seminar möchten wir unsere Ideen und Erfahrungen, die wir im Rahmen des fachbezogenen Sprachunterrichts im Bereich des Schreibens erworben haben, weitergeben. Es werden von den Lehrern, die an der Juristischen Fakultät den Unterricht in den lebenden Sprachen (d.h. V této prezentaci, a částečně i workshopu, bychom vás rádi seznámili s naší představou Public Speaking Support Group na CJV, která se inspirovala setkáním Toastmasters na jaře 2017. I přestože všichni učíme prezentace, nemusí to znamenat, že sami podporu v rozvoji prezentačních dovedností nepotřebujeme. Odstartováním této pracovní skupiny bychom rádi podpořili svůj vlastní potenciál tím, že se aktivně do prezentací zapojíme, budeme o nich diskutovat a učit se ze zpětné vazby ostatních účastníků.

In this presentation/workshop, we would like to introduce the idea of Public Support Speaking Group at the Language Centre, which draws from our experience of a Toastmasters session we had the opportunity to attend in spring 2017. We all teach our students public speaking, but that does not necessarily mean we do not need to practise ourselves. In the proposed support group, we would like to enhance our own potential as public speakers by taking the courage to engage in it, discuss it, and learn from each other’s feedback. Anybody genuinely interested is welcome to attend.

Interlinguistic mediation in the 21st-century foreign language classroom.

Due to today’s communicative use of languages, with speakers frequently facing multilingual situations or having to carry out bilingual tasks, both written and oral interlinguistic mediation play a renewed role in the foreign language classroom. Therefore, the monolingual approach to teaching languages has to make room for interlinguistic activities since students have to be trained in this skill as much as in the others. Within the panoply of possibilities that this skill offers, we will explore the potential of written interlinguistic mediation (pedagogical translation) as a tool to teach languages from three different perspectives: as a communicative task, as a textual activity, and as a communicative/cognitive strategy to manage and foster interaction. Although an emphasis will be placed on the English-Spanish linguistic pair, all the methodological principles and techniques outlined can be easily adapted for other language combinations.

About the lecturer:

Dr Adolfo Sánchez Cuadrado holds a BA in Translation and Interpretation from the University of Granada, an MA in Foreign Language Pedagogy from the University of Delaware and a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Granada.

He has been a teacher of Spanish since 1998. Prior to his current teaching appointment at University College London he has taught in Spain (Centre of Modern Languages of the University of Granada) and USA (University of Delaware). He is also the Language Coordinator at the Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies Department of UCL. He has extensive experience in teacher training, and regularly teaches courses and Master’s seminars on pedagogical translation, classroom management and dynamics, lesson planning and classroom observation at several institutions such as Instituto Cervantes and Spanish universities.

His research interests lie within the fields of pedagogical translation, group dynamics in foreign language teaching, data-driven classroom research and language testing (especially test validation procedures, and listening & reading assessment). Among his publications are chapters in Developments in Teaching Spanish as a Second and Foreign Language (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2012) and Cognitive Linguistics and Spanish as a Foreign Language (Routledge, in press) as well as several articles in research journals. His PhD thesis was awarded the ASELE research prize and has been published as a monograph by this international teachers association (forthcoming).

He has collaborated in the development of the eLADE (Examen en línea de Acreditación de Dominio de Español), the first fully online test to accredit Spanish proficiency, which is certified by CercleS, and acts as a certified assessor for the DELE exams (A1 through C2 levels) of the Cervantes Institute.

Continuing professional development is vital for the success of a language teaching organisation, both in terms of staff fulfilment and student achievement. However, running a lively programme which meets the needs and expectations of all those involved is hugely challenging. This workshop will outline ways to promote and support personalised Teacher Development, and give teachers the space to explore classroom practice and engage with the wider EFL community.

The session will be of interest to teachers keen to take control of their own development, as well as to managers looking to refresh their CPD programmes.

Na několika stanovištích budou probíhat moderované diskuze o jednotlivých oblastech jazykového vzdělávání (např. sebe/hodnocení, výběr a tvorba materiálů), kde lze různými prostředky a v různé míře podpořit autonomii studentů.

The aim of this sharing session is to discover and identify various possibilities of developing learner autonomy in regular foreign language classes. Several stations will offer moderated discussions on individual areas of language education (e.g. self/evaluation, choice of sources and materials design), where students´s autonomy can be supported in different ways and degrees.

Interlinguistic mediation in the 21st-century foreign language classroom.

Due to today’s communicative use of languages, with speakers frequently facing multilingual situations or having to carry out bilingual tasks, both written and oral interlinguistic mediation play a renewed role in the foreign language classroom. Therefore, the monolingual approach to teaching languages has to make room for interlinguistic activities since students have to be trained in this skill as much as in the others. Within the panoply of possibilities that this skill offers, we will explore the potential of written interlinguistic mediation (pedagogical translation) as a tool to teach languages from three different perspectives: as a communicative task, as a textual activity, and as a communicative/cognitive strategy to manage and foster interaction. Although an emphasis will be placed on the English-Spanish linguistic pair, all the methodological principles and techniques outlined can be easily adapted for other language combinations.

About the lecturer:

Dr Adolfo Sánchez Cuadrado holds a BA in Translation and Interpretation from the University of Granada, an MA in Foreign Language Pedagogy from the University of Delaware and a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Granada.

He has been a teacher of Spanish since 1998. Prior to his current teaching appointment at University College London he has taught in Spain (Centre of Modern Languages of the University of Granada) and USA (University of Delaware). He is also the Language Coordinator at the Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies Department of UCL. Coordinating and managing a team of teachers can be one of the more stimulating aspects of academic management, but it will always present challenges. One of these is the thorny issue of how to manage a teacher who refuses to develop.

In this workshop, we will look at what we mean by “coasting teachers”, we’ll consider the potential causes of coasting; examine the threats to your language teaching organisation; and discuss some management strategies to get teachers back on track and revitalize them.
